These men returned from World War II after having been fighter pilots and they knew that a calm and sedentary existence would not be exciting enough for them. In this era, over cars were listed and most nights saw a turnout of cars. An attempt was made to race twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays to fulfill the spectator demand for more action. At that time, there was very little competition for the Denver sports dollar and the CARC was a large drawing card. A late model class made up of more contemporary cars was developed in the mid's but wasn't as popular as the "semi-modified stock cars" that made the CARC famous. Competition was still fierce for the semi-modifieds and the large crowds continued to fill the stands.
Great show last night at the Belleville Vintage Nationals. Pancake breakfast and car show on the square in downtown Belleville this morning, high-level racing history discussion this afternoon at the High Banks Museum, then back to the track for night two of vintage action on the High Banks. The gates are open, the swap meet is getting set up, and the vintage cars are arriving. Vintage oval exhibitions for two nights, plus a car show on the square tomorrow morning and visits to the High Banks and Midget Auto Racing Museum all weekend. One of the highlights of any race season is a visit to Belleville! It was our best show ever! We had 42 cars on hand, with a huge crowd of people visiting, looking over the cars, sharing photographs and memories of the Lakeside Speedway days.
Ten minutes before you plan to leave for work, you venture outside in the freezing cold and, watching your breath form before you as you do so, get the thing warmed up. Most of us hate getting inside of cold, frozen cars. A select group of drivers, however, embraces the cold. Many of them can nimbly handle a car or motorcycle in sub-zero temperatures, smoothly drifting over a patch of ice when, for most of us, our muscles would be too frozen to react.
